Your most important resource
Water is the most important thing to have in a crisis. You need at least three liters a day to drink, cook and keep yourself clean. But it's not just the amount that matters – it's also how you store and ensure that the water is clean. Although the municipality can provide water tanks in the event of a water shortage, it's wise to be prepared and have your own storage at home. Here's how to prepare:
Retrieve and store water
- Get pounding or buckets with lids that are made for food. They are practical for both collecting and storing water.
- Buy water purification filter and tablets to purify the water.
- You can also buy bottled water. It's an easy way to always have drinking water at home.
Store water properly
- Store the water in a cool and dark place, preferably in a cupboard or basement. Sunlight can promote the growth of algae and bacteria.
- It is a good idea to rotate your water every 3-6 months. A good tip for when you can rotate your water and review your emergency stock is when the hoarse Fredrik is tested. Then you will get a reminder and a good routine approximately every 3 months.
- Check your water. Taste and smell it. If it feels different, replace it.
Purify the water if necessary
- If you are unsure whether the water is clean, boil it until it bubbles vigorously. This is an effective way to kill bacteria and parasites.
Smart tips for extra security
Freeze water in PET bottles. It's doubly practical – the bottles act as ice packs if the power goes out, and when the ice melts you have drinking water. Just be careful not to fill the bottles completely; water expands when it freezes and the bottles may crack.
Consider getting a water purifier, filter, or tablets that can purify water. They are small and easy to carry, especially if you need to get water from an unsafe source.
Important to remember
In a crisis, water is not just a convenience, it’s a necessity. By thinking ahead and creating your own water supply at home, you can get by for days without outside help. Having clean water is a simple but vital preparation that can make a big difference if a crisis should arise.
