Digital security

Digitalization has made our everyday lives smoother and more connected, but it has also increased our vulnerability to cyberattacks. These attacks can knock out important IT systems and cause major damage to both individuals and societal functions. Therefore, it is more important than ever that we all take responsibility for handling information securely, both privately and in the workplace. By being aware of the risks and taking simple security measures, you can make a big difference and contribute to Sweden's resilience to cyberthreats.

Here are some practical tips you can follow to protect both your own information and society at large:

  • Create strong passwords :
A good password is longer than 12 characters and contains a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters like @ or #. The more complex your password is, the harder it will be for an attacker to crack it. Remember not to use the same password for multiple services.

  • Be careful with emails and attachments :
Cybercriminals often use email as a tool to spread malware. If you receive an email from a sender you don't recognize, don't open the attachment or click on any links. Even if the email seems innocent, it could contain viruses or Trojans that can infect your computer and give the attacker access to your information.

  • Update your devices :
Security updates are released regularly to fix known vulnerabilities in software and operating systems. By installing these updates as soon as they become available, you can close security holes that attackers could otherwise exploit. This applies to computers, smartphones, and other connected technology such as smart home devices.

  • Back up your information :
Important files and documents should be backed up regularly. This can be done to an external hard drive, a USB stick, or through a cloud service. Should your device be infected with ransomware, where your files are locked and a ransom is required to get them back, a backup can prevent you from losing your information.

By following these tips, you reduce the risk of being exposed to cyberattacks and at the same time contribute to protecting Sweden's IT infrastructure. Whether you handle sensitive information at work or just surf the web at home, it is important to be aware of the threats and act proactively. Digital security is not just something for companies and authorities – it is everyone's responsibility.
