At a high level of readiness, Sweden's defense capability is strengthened, and the entire society is involved to ensure that important functions are maintained.
High alert
The government decides on a heightened state of readiness in times of war or when security is seriously threatened. This means that the authorities' advice must be followed carefully, and if general military service is introduced, those deployed to war must report for duty quickly. The heightened state of readiness includes two levels: heightened preparedness and highest alert .
-
Enhanced preparedness
This level implies a danger of war or extreme conditions outside the country's borders. Society must be adjusted to the needs of total defense, but activities continue as normally as possible. -
Highest readiness
The highest level is automatically activated in the event of war, or if the government assesses that there is a risk of war. All activities must then support total defense, and authorities and municipalities are reorganized for war situations.
Information about heightened alert
In the event of a high alert, information is provided via radio and television, primarily Sveriges Radio P4, which functions as an emergency channel. The outdoor warning system, also known as "Hesa Fredrik", is used when necessary to warn the public.
Shelter
Sweden has approximately 65,000 air raid shelters with space for seven million people. These can be put into use within two days in the event of war or heightened alert. If you hear the air raid siren, seek shelter in the nearest air raid shelter immediately.
