Sun, vacation and risk of heatstroke
Read this before you travel
The summer of 2025 promises extreme heat – both in Sweden and southern Europe, where temperatures above 40 degrees have already been reported. With the heat comes risks, especially for children, the elderly and animals.
Here are some quick tips to help you enjoy the summer – without taking unnecessary risks.

Sun protection
-
Use a sun protection factor of 30 or higher – preferably SPF 50 in southern Europe.
-
Apply 30 minutes before going out, and reapply every two hours and after swimming.
-
Don't miss vulnerable areas like ears, feet and the back of the neck.
-
Stay in the shade during the middle of the day and avoid physical activity between about 12–16?–?it can be life-threatening. In Andalusia, for example, temperatures above 45?°C have been measured.
-
Wear a sun hat and UV clothing.
Liquid
-
Drink at least 2–3 liters of water per day, more during activity or high heat.
-
Avoid too much coffee and alcohol – they dehydrate the body.
-
Electrolytes or salt tablets can be important if you sweat heavily. It's a good idea to buy some for your trip.
Cool
-
A cold shower or a wet towel around the neck and wrists provides quick relief.
-
Keep bedrooms dark and cool – place a frozen water bottle in front of a fan for improvised cooling.
-
Dress in light, loose-fitting garments made of cotton or linen – synthetic warmth is not something you want.

Summary: The heat is here to stay – but with the right preparation it will be much more bearable. Take care of yourself and your loved ones in the sun. And remember: sometimes the shade is the best place on earth. Enjoy too :)
